Campsyte is a temporary mixed-use development using repurposed shipping containers on an existing paved parking lot. Campsyte consists of a 3-level building for 2 retail/food vendors, 5 units of office and 5 parking spaces on a 3,200 sq ft parking lot located in San Francisco’s Central SOMA District. Common spaces and amenities include a landscaped courtyard, secure bike storage, and shared lounges and micro kitchens.
Our primary objective in designing this new temporary development was to balance an industrial urban environment with smart technology and eco-design.
We used simple materials including raw metals, reclaimed wood, and storefront glass systems to accomplish our goals of a minimalist yet expansive space. We sought out rawness and elegance using repurposed shipping containers and exposing the lightweight structural framing system. The wood slats wrap around the exterior corridors and draw in warmth while providing semi privacy and diffusion of light. Sustainability features include waterless urinals, LED lighting, solar power, reclaimed wood for railings, permeable paving and modular construction using recycled shipping containers. Aetypic provided architecture, structural, and civil engineering consulting.
